gonzález murillo house
santo domingo, heredia, 2010

The house is located at the end of a dead end street, at a residential area, and adjacent to a factory. The site is rectangular, with its shorter sides facing east and west. This generated climate factors determining the house to be open on north and south facades. The house is designed for a four-member family, who wanted a house with a living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry area, three bedrooms, family room, four bathrooms and patios.
The proposal consists of two boxes, a small one in the lower level for public programmatic needs, and an oblong box in the second level, going from east to west, which contains the private area. These two boxes aim to create an atmosphere that is full of natural light, and related to the three patios that become intermingled in the lower level.

The patios receive shadow by the second level volume, allowing the first level area to become larger for an eventual social activity, for example.
On the second level, an intermediate area has a view to a double height space, dividing the bedrooms. These spaces continuously orient sight to patios, and are ventilated by natural means, just as every area in the house.
The composition is organized with a linear axis in plan, which goes through the terrain from east to west, and connects spaces and patios from the main entrance.
A chimney is reminiscent of the neighbor factory, on a different and homelike atmosphere, which dilates the architectural programmatic needs to stimulate the enjoyment of space composed by light and patios.
