segura house
escazú, 2003

Ampliation on Segura House responds to the clients’ request to create a multiple use space for activities such as dancing, playing pool, barbecue, watching tv, or just rest, cook or shower after a soccer game.
For this reason, the design resulted on an open space of 120m2, with a central structural system of metallic columns which support I beams that generate cantilevered roofs from 2 to 4 meters long out of the four facades.
The house is articulated with the ampliation by a space covered by a white rooftop. Towards north, a glass plane protects the facade from rain.

At the west façade the space opens up to the existing yard with a roof projection of 1,5m and a vertical rail that prevents trespassing by the four dogs –belonging to each four children of the family. Some additional architectonic elements stand out, like a barbecue entering the multiple use space, a continuous wooden bench and a pond for fish breeding. The covering –a one sloped wedge- is the result of the search for a contemporary expressionist architecture, adapted to the place and with a conscious respect to site and building time.
