the police station of the "Carmen" district (expansion)
san josé, 2011
The police station of the “Carmen” district is located near the Simon Bolivar Zoo and requires expanding its headquarters to include a dining room and improve the qualities of its kitchen.
This miniature program is designed on an adjacent space to the existent H.Q. on the corner of the block. Its measures are 6 x 6 m. (Approximately 19 x 19 feet.)
This corner offers facades to the south and east, at the same time it’s linked by a dead end street glancing at the railroad. There are a Mango tree (Mangifera indica.) and a Roble Sabana. (Tabebuia rosea Bignoniaceae.)
The proposal suggests a vertical box with a floor area of 5,4m x 5,4m (17.7 x 17.7 ft) locating the kitchen and two bathrooms in the lower floor, and a dining room for 28 officers in the upper floor.
The configuration of such spaces, in collaboration with the concrete vents used, seeks to enhance the natural ventilation of the internal space.

The vents in the facades and the masonry are arranged in a module. As you enter the second floor an opening allows you to face straight to the Mango tree. Also a window facing north illuminates the dining room with zenithal light, and lets in the sight of the Roble Sabana.
The facades are painted black and the inner walls white, the vents and stair risers are painted in a fluorescent yellow, alluding the main chromatic symbols of the national police force.
This vertical black box, seeks to emerge as an urban milestone, dignifying the meal periods of the police force, and sending out a message of safety to the community.
