papyrus store
juan santamaría international airport, 2002
Papyrus store is located on the East Shopping Center at the Juan Santamaría International Airport. Its adaptation to the site is produced when relating to an axis in diagonal, which faces toward the central area of the Shopping Center plaza. Its design uses architectonic elements inspired on the airport’s architecture and considers the subject matter of costa rican design of the beginnings of the 21st century.
Functionally Papyrus store responds to a program in which books, magazines, maps and guides prevail. Its organization is based on an open plan, to facilitate different distributions of products.
Formally the link to the site by a diagonal axis stands out. The axis is evidenced in the store’s ceiling. An I-beam breaks the space, to invite to enter, and is the middle point between the ceiling design and the furniture arrangement.
Conceptually the design is fomented by a contemporary costa rican language. The national artistic development will be promoted and exposed in different sections of the store, with translucent prints of the art pieces by local artists. In addition, the warmth of the floor -inspired on the papyrus theme- contrasts with a neutral furniture where products stand out.
